TOKYO (AP) - A Japanese ship rescued 96 Vietnamese refugees it found
drifting in a small boat in the western Pacific, the Maritime Safety
Agency said Friday.
It said the 1,514-ton car carrier Hosei Maru spotted the refugees
Thursday night about 75 miles west of Luzon island in the Philippines
and reported by radio they included 26 men, 29 women and 41 children.
The refugees left Da Nang Jan. 12 aboard their 20-ton boat for the
United States via the Philippines, the MSA said. The Hosei Maru
initially towed the boat, but it sank early Friday and the 96 were
taken aboard.
The agency said the Hosei Maru was heading for Singapore.
